Night in the village
As the fierce heat of the day softens and the blue of the sky becomes streaked with soft turquoise blues, mauve hues and orange in the Evening Sky. The Concert begins .Up in the village the chorus of children screaming and shouting as they play outside with Mums calling έλα εδώ or σταμάτα το as they prepare late tea.
The hiss, pop and screach of the Scooters coming up the hill. The cockerels crowing and Dogs barking. And the Bells toll sad or glad it still sounds the same as it rebounds off the walls of houses tightly packed in around the Village
As the night draws in the Old Ladies come out and sit on rickety framed old chairs by their doors as they watch the world go by. Old men sit in groups playing Backgammon, drinking coffee and nearly always smoking as they too watch the world go by. Faces of contentment, amusement still part of the everyday, not shut away in homes or Flats never seeing a soul. People stop to speak, shout greetings, laugh and enjoy.
The restaurant owners prepare their tables for the evening, still sleepy after a siesta. The youngsters start their promenading, the flirting, chatting and giggling as the Village comes to life.
The tourists who have made it up to the village saunter around looking for somewhere to relax, eat and enjoy the view serenaded by the haunting sound of Bouzouki rebetiko music playing in the background old and new. The high pitch of cicadas calls from across the waste ground overlooking the harbour. Kefalos comes to life, refreshed after a day of sultry heat yet warmed by the cooler evening up on the hilltop.
And as you look across the Bay lights twinkle back at you. The reflection in the Harbour hugs the coastline and the dark night sky is illuminated by millions of twinkling stars. I love the evenings
A night out in the resort
After a day of baking
in the sun, dipping in and out of the pool, sipping Ice cool drinks
and eating Greek Salad you return to your apartment for a shower and
a chance to put your feet up. As the evening draws in the air
changes, the colour pallete softens from the intensity of the blue
and the cicadas start to chatter. You dress in your holiday best,
your strappy sandals, off the shoulder floaty dresses or your Linen
Blend cool trousers and saunter along the main road. Some of you
choose the beach front path, up and over the little bridge with their
dry beds, still festooned with flowers and insect life. Some of you
have just come off the beach staying there as long as you possibly
can and don't go back and change.
The lights come on
along the waterfront accentuating the curve in the bay and reflecting
in the calm waters. It's a Millpond night and all you can hear is the
gentle whoosh of the waves across the shingle. People meander about
looking for a place to eat. Mums and Dad's with small children push
tired babies back home after an early evening meal, passing others
just going out for the evening.
The lights in the
Tavernas draw you in to your favorite eateries, while some of you try
new venues, meet up with friends or new acquaintances made on your
holiday
The mood is peaceful,
calm, even the few cars or Peds that pass by move slowly. Dogs run
in and out looking for their favourite spot to stop and read the
Canine Newspaper whilst cats forever on the prowl, look hopefully up
at you as you sit down to eat. Some stay, whilst some get shewed
away.
As the evening drifts
by the soft breeze dips as you sit gazing out across the harbour.
As the evening draws to
a close and it's time to drift back home or taste a cocktail or two
how strange it is to feel moisture in the air and those of you on
Quads or in cars have to wipe the dew off the seats or windows. Home
and ready for the next day.
